The E4B, the National Airborne Operations Center, provides an airborne operations center in case of a national emergency or destruction of ground command centers. A militarized version of the Boeing 747-200, it is outfitted to provide a modern highly survivable, command, control and communications center to direct U.S. forces, to execute emergency war orders, and to coordinate actions by civil authorities. Additionally, this aircraft supports the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), by flying emergency response teams to a disaster area (hurricane, tornado, etc.) and acting as the agency’s command and control center until FEMA’s equipment and facilities can be set up. |
