Updating an U.S. Air Force base's communications network posed some critical challenges. The network had to run 24/7 without exception. Speed was essential. It was vital that each office be able to communicate within the base as well as with bases within the region. Classified communications had to be separate from unclassified communications, encrypted, and routed to authorized recipient via secure methods. All this needed to be accomplished within strict budgetary, space, and personnel limitations.
Under a contract with DISA, Cornet Technology tailored a switching solution that took the complication and expense out of developing such a system. By combining our MACX II SONET port concentrator unit (PCU) and matrix switching solutions, we simplified LAN/WAN connections, reduced hardware, space, and cable requirements, and eliminated the need to lease costly Point of Presence (POP) multiplexers from the phone company. CTI's CorScan network management software enabled the entire system to be monitored, tested, spared, and controlled by any authorized remote on the network.
